Deborah Robbins

Deborah Robbins, CRM, has over twenty years of experience in the Records and Information Governance field, in city, county, and federal government, legal, finance, education, utilities, and private sectors. She has been involved in ARMA local leadership boards. Deborah is the former Chair of the ICRM Mentoring Committee, and a leader of a CRA/CRM Study Group. Deborah has served as a frequent speaker on topics such as data mapping, gaining compliance with RIM programs, professional growth, change management and business continuity and disaster recovery.

Viewing records management as the cornerstone of information governance, she encourages professionals to reclaim their influence with key stakeholders.

Shannon Heim

Shannon has been the host of Records Management University for almost five years and has been a volunteer since 2014. With a deep passion for records management and a commitment to supporting the community, Shannon has spent over a decade creating and delivering engaging content that helps professionals in the field navigate the complexities of modern records management. Her contributions extend beyond hosting; Shannon is also the creative mind behind the illustrations featured in RMU’s educational materials.

Her unique approach combines practical insight with creativity, ensuring that RMU content is both accessible and impactful for professionals at all levels.

An introduction to Records Management, covering the foundations of a Records and Information Management (RIM) program. We will also explore the uniqueness of the federal industry and discuss what constitutes a record.

Defining the records life cycle, from creation to disposition. We will discuss important concepts such as taxonomy, metadata, and capture options. We will cover the tools and technologies used for managing federal records, including data maps, ECM/EDMS, and disclosure support, as well as the importance of managing sensitivity, including PII, IP, security, CUI, and other related concerns.

In this session, we will review retention schedules, providing a basic overview of Records Retention Schedules (RRS) and federal requirements. We will also cover the process of creating file plans and inventories, and examine the challenges posed by the federal structure that impacts records and information management (RIM).

This class will focus on ensuring success in records management by emphasizing the importance of awareness, access, and accountability, and exploring how to gain visibility, compliance, and allies within your organization. In this session, we will discuss strategies for preserving and disposing of records, with a focus on knowing when it is time to let go.
